Nomy Lamm & Pratibha Parmar

Nomy Lamm is a writer, musician, performance artist and voice teacher based in San Francisco.   Her band, nomy lamm & THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD, is a flexible platform for collaboration with everyone and everything, including other musicians, artists, poets, puppeteers, spectators, and the moon.  She performs regularly with Sins Invalid [sinsinvalid.org], creating musical dreamworld performance art about disability, sexuality and social justice.  She writes an advice column for Make/Shift magazine [makeshiftmag.com] called “Dear Nomy,” and has just completed the manuscript of her first book, a collection of interconnected short stories centering around moments of trauma and transformation, called “515 Clues.”  nomylamm.com

Filmmaker Pratibha Parmar is a writer, producer, and director. Pratibha Parmar has a passionate commitment to making films with integrity and illuminating untold stories with visual flair and imagination. Her award-winning work has been widely exhibited at international film festivals and broadcast globally. Pratibha’s credits include A Place of Rage, a documentary film on African-American women and the civil rights movement featuring Angela Davis and June Jordan. The film received international critical acclaim and was named Best Historical Documentary at the National Black Programming Consortium in the U.S. In 1993 Pratibha released her most challenging film Warrior Marks, which documented female genital mutilation at a time when the subject was taboo globally. Parmar and Walker collaborated on the book Warrior Marks – Female Genital Mutilation and the Sexual Blinding of Women, which documented the making of the film. Nina’s Heavenly Delights, Pratibha’s multi-award winning narrative feature film debut was released theatrically in the UK and US in 2006|7 and nominated for a GLAAD Award. Jewel Gomez

Jewelle Gomez is powerhouse of unending talents she is a writer and activist and the author of
the double Lambda Award-winning novel, THE GILDA STORIES from Firebrand Books, three
poetry collections THE LIPSTICK PAPERS(1980), FLAMINGOES AND BEARS(1986) both self
published, and ORAL TRADITION also from FIREBRAND BOOKS. All this among editing various
anthologies, writing plays, and publishing widely. She has presented lectures and taught at
numerous institutions of higher learning including San Francisco State University, Hunter College,
Rutgers University, New College of California, Grinnell College, San Diego City College, The Ohio
State University and the University of Washington (Seattle). Her new projects include a comic
novel about black activists of the 1960s as they face middle age entitled TELEVISED.  Her new
play, written in collaboration with Harry Waters Jr. is called WAITING FOR GIOVANNI. A dream
play exploring the inner life of author James Baldwin, it has its world premiere at the New

Amber Hollibaugh [2006]

Amber Hollibaugh is the Interim Executive Director of Queers for Economic Justice (QEJ).
Formerly she was Chief Officer of Elder & LBTI Women’s Services at Howard Brown Health
Center in Chicago. A well known activist, artist, public intellectual and community organizer, she
was a founding member of Queers for Economic Justice and is currently on the boards of CLAGS
(the Center for Lesbian & Gay Studies), LAIN (LGBT Aging Issues Network) of ASA and on the
editorial board of GLQ, The Journal of Lesbian & Gay Studies.She was a recipient of the Dr.
Susan B. Love award for outstanding achievement in women’s health and is the author of MY
DANGEROUS DESIRES – A Queer Girl Dreaming Her Way Home (Duke University Press,
2002), and the director and co-producer of THE HEART OF THE MATTER, a documentary film
focusing on women’s sexuality, denial and risk for HIV and AIDS. The film won the 1994
Sundance Film Festival Freedom of Expression award and premiered on PBS’s prestigious POV
film series.

Hanne Blank [2006]

Hanne Blank spends her time thinking, learning, writing, and speaking at the crossroads of
bodies, self, and culture. Joyfully spanning the town/gown divide as well as the mind/body split,
her books include the histories Straight: The Surprisingly Short History of Heterosexuality
(Beacon Press, 2012) and Virgin: The Untouched History (Bloomsbury, 2007), the cult classic sex
and body-acceptance book Big Big Love: A Sex and Relationships Guide for People of Size (and
Those Who Love Them) (Celestial Arts, 2011), and numerous others.Hanne lives in a 175-year-old stone mill cottage on a dirt road in the middle of Baltimore, and travels frequently to
speak and teach. She is a passionate defender of the Oxford comma, is a tea and cider drinker who lives in a
coffee and beer country, and has a nice tnettennba.

Dorothy Allison [2006]

Dorothy Allison grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, the first child of a fifteen-year-old unwed mother who worked as a waitress.Now living in Northern California with her partner Alix and her
teenage son, Wolf Michael, she describes herself as a feminist, a working class story teller, a
Southern expatriate, a sometime poet and a happily born-again Californian. Allison received
mainstream recognition with her novel Bastard Out of Carolina, (1992) a finalist for the 1992
National Book Award.The novel won the Ferro Grumley prize, an ALA Award for Lesbian and Gay
Writing, became a best seller, and an award-winning movie. It has been translated into more than
a dozen languages.Cavedweller (1998) became a national bestseller, NY Times Notable book of
the year, finalist for the Lillian Smith prize, and an ALA prize winner. Adapted for the stage by
Kate Moira Ryan, the play was directed by Michael Greif, and featured music by Hedwig
composer, Stephen Trask. In 2003, Lisa Cholendenko directed a movie version featuring Krya
Sedwick. Allison says that the early Feminist movement changed her life. ”It was like opening
your eyes under water. It hurt, but suddenly everything that had been dark and mysterious
became visible and open to change.” However, she admits, she would never have begun to
publish her stories if she hadn’t gotten over her prejudices, and started talking to her mother and
sisters again.

Julia Serrano [2008]

Julia Serano is an Oakland, California-based writer, spoken word performer, trans
activist, and biologist. Julia is the author of Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and
the Scapegoating of Femininity (Seal Press, 2007), a collection of personal essays that reveal
how misogyny frames popular assumptions about femininity and shapes many of the myths and
misconceptions people have about transsexual women. Her other writings have appeared in
anthologies (including Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and A World Without
Rape, BITCHfest: Ten Years of Cultural Criticism from the Pages of Bitch Magazine and Word
Warriors: 30 Leaders in the Women’s Spoken Word Movement) and in magazines and websites
such as Bitch, AlterNet.org, Out, Feministing.com, Clamor, Kitchen Sink, make/shift, other, LiP
and Transgender Tapestry. In recent years, Julia has gained noteriety in transgender, queer, and
feminist circles for her unique insights into gender. She has been invited to speak about
transgender and trans women’s issues at numerous univerisites, at queer, women’s studies,
psychology and philosophy-themed conferences, and her writings have been used as teaching
materials in college- and graduate-level gender studies, queer theory, human sexuality and
psychology courses across the North America.

Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha [2008]

Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha is a queer disabled Sri Lankan writer, teacher and cultural
worker. The author of Consensual Genocide and Love Cake and co-editor of The Revolution
Starts At Home: Confronting Intimate Violence in Activist Communities (South End, 2011), her
work has appeared in the anthologies Persistence: Still Butch and Femme, Yes Means Yes,
Visible: A Femmethology, Homelands,Colonize This, We Don’t Need Another Wave, Bitchfest,
Without a Net, Dangerous Families,Brazen Femme, Femme and A Girl’s Guide to Taking Over
The World. She co-founded Mangos With Chili (with our very own fabulous Cherry Galette), the
national queer and trans people of color performance organization, is a lead artist with Sins
Invalid and teaches with June Jordan’s Poetry for the People. In 2010 she was named one of the Feminist Press’ “40
Feminists Under 40 Who Are Shaping the Future.” Her one woman show, Grown Woman
Show, has toured nationally, including performances at the National Queer Arts Festival,
Swarthmore College, Yale University, Reed College and McGill University. She has taught,
performed and lectured across the country, including appearances at Columbia, Oberlin, Texas
A&M, Sarah Lawrence, Swarthmore, UC Berkeley, USC, and the University of Toronto. She
co-founded Toronto’s Asian Arts Freedom School. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from
Mills College, focusing on creative nonfiction and community-based teaching by writers of color.

Veronica Combs aka Vixen Noir [2008]

Veronica Combs aka Vixen Noir is a fresh, but very ripe, up and coming singer, songwriter and
recording artist. In addition to being a musical artist, Vixen is a talented performance artist,
burlesque/striptease artist, dancer, spoken word artist/poetess, teacher and director and producer
of live theatre and sexy cabaret. She has been wowing audiences worldwide with her brand of
entertainment and performance workshops, which serve her primary mission: to empower women
in their ’erotic power’ all over the world, so that they live true to their hearts and passions! Vixen’s
performances are bold and unapologetic and inspire others to revel in their own power.
She integrates her extensive dance and theatre background to create performances that range
from sublime to raucous, raunchy to sensual, titillating to beautiful, and that are artistically
compelling and visually stimulating. She is dedicated to using her artistry to build bridges across
racial, social and economic divides and to inspire others to celebrate the diversity of gender and
sexual expression. With her in-your-face, kickass, raw talent and sexy-as-hell style, she is about to bust onto the
music scene with her debut single, Dangerous, in early 2012! She describes her music as
“alternative dance pop soul with a lil’ hip hop & rock thrown in for extra spice.” Her musical
influences include Nina Simone, Grace Jones, Donny Hathaway, Queen, Police, Madonna,
Prince, Eurythmics, Lauryn Hill—to name a few of the many. A major influence for Vixen? Deep
House Music! She grew up on this music and says, “I want people to be moved deep down in
their hearts, their spirits, their bodies by my music, the way house music moves me. So there will
always be some element of house, however small or subtle, in my music.”

Kate Bornstein [2010]

Kate Bornstein is an author, playwright and performance artist. She’s best known for her
ground-breaking books on postmodern gender theory, Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and the
Rest of Us; and My Gender Workbook. Her latest works, Hello, Cruel World: 101 Alternatives To
Suicide For Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws, is a runaway underground best-seller. Kate’s
books are taught in over 120 colleges and universities around the world; and she has performed
their work live on college campuses, and in theaters and performance spaces across North
America, Europe, and Australia. In 2008 she released a new memoir, by Seven Stories Press,
Kate Bornstein Is A Queer and Pleasant Danger.

Moki Macias [2010]

Moki Macias is a queer femme organizer and community planner in Atlanta, Georgia. Among
many other accomplishments, she is the co-founder of BLOCS — Building Locally to Organize for
Community Safety — a grassroots organization dedicated to building the leadership and power of
those most affected by Atlanta’s police and prison system by fighting for police accountability and
developing effective strategies to create just and peaceful communities.
